NAHU CDHC Incentive Through March 31, 2010

For only a short time, NAHU is offering a member who recruits a new member registering for the class, an additional 20% discount on her/his CDHC registration fee. This class offers chapters a great way to recruit non-members who can join on the day of the class and then receive a full refund for the cost of the class. Chapters that have more than 100 students in attendance will benefit from a $10 revenue share per attendee. Chapters can invite surrounding States to increase participation. Several of NAHU’s chapters have already been greatly successful.

NAHU provides top-notch instructors who are leading experts in the industry.
NAHU provides AV and room expense reimbursement.
NAHU provides all course materials.
NAHU provides secondary promotion of the event.

Benefits

The new and improved certification program, Consumer-Driven Health Care (CDHC), is a four-hour course that provides brokers and employers with technical, actionable information they can use to help clients consider these fast-evolving plans and implement them successfully. The course will help NAHU members to better understand the three main types of health care accounts associated with consumer-driven health care plans: FSAs, HSAs and HRAs. These opportunities have created new responsibilities for agents and brokers, and advising clients in these areas is more difficult and time-consuming than it has been in the past. New Health reform changes include changes to CDHC plans. These plans represent significant promise for improving health care spending. With companies still struggling to keep health insurance costs in check, more employers will be offering consumer-directed health care plans (CDHCPs), including health savings accounts (HSAs), during the upcoming open-enrollment season.

Got CE?

Through NAHU's CDHC class, agents and brokers can fulfill their insurance CE credit needs. The certification will serve as a distinction for producers as credentialed experts in the sophisticated space of CDHC, and is approved by states for insurance continuing education credits. Upon successful completion of the final exam associated with this course, students will receive four credit hours for continuing education and a certificate of completion. NAHU is encouraging chapters to schedule the CDHC class now for 2010 and take advantage of a prepackaged educational opportunity at little or no cost to the local chapter.

Education Plans for 2008-2009

Welcome to the first Education blog for the 2008-2009 year. Education is a vital part of the mission of CAHU and I am planning an active year to make available more education choices for CAHU members.

Here are some of the things I am planning:

A lot of us think that having a CE presentation during a chapter’s membership meetings is an essential part of a successful meeting. I believe that a non-CE presentation by an interesting speaker on a topic not usually presented as a CE, such as opinions from industry leaders, can be just as effective as a CE class. The internet has many CE classes so that CE may not be the draw that it was in the past - the right combination of topic and speaker for a non-CE class can be very attractive.

I am going to create a database for non-CE speakers, available to all members and chapters. In fact, you can help. If you have seen a great speaker in the past and know enough information so we can contact that person, please email info@cahu.org with your suggestions. The database will take some time to grow, but it should give chapters a lot of alternatives.

Another area that I will look at is improving the on-line CE class offerings. We are busy, and sometimes we run into the CE deadline for renewing our licenses, and several units of an on-line CE class has saved many of us. I will contact on-line CE providers to include them in our portfolio of providers.

A third area is to encourage chapters to promote, and have individuals enrolled in the RHU/REBC programs. NAHU is now making available several RHU classes on-line which may make it easier for some to enroll in this program.

Finally, as a long term goal, I am going to start to look at what CAHU can do to educate newly licensed health brokers. The average age of a health broker is in the late 50’s and the industry needs more qualified younger brokers. We need to look for ways to help these younger brokers acquire the knowledge to become professionals.

Please let me or your chapter officers know of your questions, concerns and suggestions. You can e-mail me at rcoburn@wordandbrown.com.

How To Search For CE Classes and Course Outlines on the CAHU Website

You can now search and find CE classes on CAHU's website quickly and easily. All of CAHU's CE classes are listed on the website at this link: http://www.cahu.org/education/celist.php?s=title&p=1

If you click on the heading of any column, the online database will sort on that column. So, if you click on the column name "Expires," the database will sort to show CE classes starting with the most recent expiration dates first. If you click on the column name "Course Title," the database will sort to show CE classes alphabetically.

The new "search title" feature is even more convenient. You will find the "search title" box at the bottom of the page below the listing of CE classes. Enter one or more words in the box and hit the "search title" button. Any CE classes with the word, or combination of words, you're searching for will be displayed.

The column on the far right contains a "view" link. If you click on this link, you can view the course outline for that CE class.
